The Systemic Design research area studies existing linear processes to define and develop internal and external connections that were hidden in order to design complex and more sustainable and efficient processes. In the current processes, in addition to the final product there is a huge amount of waste generated; on the contrary, in the system models the output of one process become inputs for another, creating realities that tend to zero emissions. The research group, coordinated by prof. arch. Luigi Bistagnino, produces theoretical papers and publications spreading the knowledge, but also tests the theory with many practical experiences cooperating with companies and associations.

In 1992, a Romanian academic group took the initiative to set up the Black Sea University Foundation, a non-political and non-profit organisation. The experience gained in 1991 and 1992 by its founders, following the organisation of five European summer schools with the support and collaboration of Bruges European College, helped consolidate the Foundation's training and life-long education dimension. BSU educational activity focused on training young researchers, economists, managers, teachers or professionals through post-graduate summer courses held in various Black Sea resorts. In 1999 BSUF received the special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
